THE 500 GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

#61 Appetite for Destruction
Guns n’ Roses
GEFFEN 1987

THE BIGGEST-SELLING debut album of the Eighties, Appetite features a lot more than the yowl of Indiana-bred W. Axl Rose, the only thing still remaining of the original G n’ R. Some of the band’s assets were in fact subtle, such as drummer Steven Adler, who brought swing and disco breakdowns to the band’s mighty metal. And while songs such as “Welcome to the Jungle” are all about urban pain, others including “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City,” have sweet, yearning lyrics that put the band’s musical ferocity in even higher relief. “A lot of rock bands are too fucking wimpy to have any sentiment or any emotion,” Rose said, “unless they’re in pain.”

Total Album sales – 15 million
Peak chart position - 1

----

The Top 10 looks like this:

1. Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – The Beatles
2. Pet Sounds – The Beach Boys
3. Revolver – The Beatles
4. Highway 61 Revisited – Bob Dylan
5. Rubber Soul – The Beatles
6. What’s Going on – Marvin Gaye
7. Exile on Main Street – The Rolling Stones
8. London Calling – The Clash
9. Blonde on Blonde – Bob Dylan
10. The Beatles (The White Album) – The Beatles

Former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER members Slash (guitar) and Matt Sorum (drums) are expected to appear at a tribute show honoring drummer Tony Thompson on December 16 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Los Angeles. Additional guest musicians are expected to be announced soon. Click here for more information.

Thompson, the drummer who powered hits by the POWER STATION, CHIC, and DIANA ROSS, and who almost joined LED ZEPPELIN, died in Encino, California, on November 12, just three days shy of his 49th birthday. Thompson had battled renal cell cancer and had undergone surgery earlier this year in an effort to combat the disease. He is survived by his wife Patrice and their two children.

Robert Evans on Slash friendship

From BLENDER magazine December 2003 Issue:

"I met Slash in 1996. He hangs here a lot - together we make a strange combo, and no one understands why he's always around. I love him because he's so cool and laid-back. I like his softness, his gentleness - it was totally unexpected, and it's the unexpected that catches you."

HIT PARADER December 2003 Issue

HEAVY METAL HAPPENINGS

VELVET REVOLVER: The highly-touted Guns 'N Roses/STP off-shoot band, Velvet Revolver has begun recording material for the debut disc. While the band featuring guitarist Slash, vocalist Scott Weiland, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum has done some previous studio work (mostly for movie soundtracks), they admit that working on their own album takes things up a notch. "There is a different feeling," Slash said. "You take things a little more seriously when you know - or at least hope - this could be something that people listen to over and over again."
