Slamdance Film Fest To Feature Perry Farrell, Former Guns N' Roses Members, Sheryl Crow And Others
The Slamdance Film Festival will be hosting a strong contingent of music-oriented films and live appearances next month in Park City, Utah, according to Festival Director Peter Baxter.

Baxter tells us that Perry Farrell will be hosting the opening night gala January 23. The featured film this year is "Three Days," a documentary by Carter B. Smith and Kevin Ford covering the recent "relapse" tour of Jane's Addiction, Farrell's old band. Farrell will not be performing.

Another highlight will be a partial reunion of Guns n' Roses. Three former members are tentatively scheduled to attend a festival jam -- guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum, who all perform on the soundtrack to the movie "The Soundman." Sorum makes an on-camera appearance in the film as well. Cypress Hill's Sen Dog, who also contributed to the music, is expected to be on hand as well. "The Soundman," directed by Steven Widi Ho, was filmed in Sante Fe, New Mexico and stars William Forsythe, Tamlyn Tomita, Wes Studi and Danny Trejo. It tells the story of the final days of a Hollywood sound man on the verge of a breakdown. Sorum and partner Lanny Cordolla were in charge of the score.

Sheryl Crow is expected to perform at Slamdance on the night of the 25th. She's involved in the soundtrack of "Dill Scallion," a fictional account of the rise and fall of a country and western singer courtesy of Los Angeles filmmaker Jordan Brady. The film is described as a "mockumentary." It stars Henry Winkler and Kathy Griffin.

The night of the 28th will see the debut of "Nusrat," a film about the late Pakistani musician and poet Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, with a live appearance by his son, who's also a respected musician.

Festival director Baxter promises live performances at the Festival Awards show on the 29th, too, but says that the artists have yet to be confirmed. One possible participant, however, is Moby, who has a film in progress and is interested in attending the event.

The Slamdance Film Festival is geared largely for first-time filmmakers as a concurrent alternative to the giant Sundance Festival. It runs from January 23-30, 1999 at Park City's Treasure Mountain Inn.
